ISO 17779:2026: BPS and BPQR are not simply renamed WPS and WPQR documents
The new edition for brazing-procedure specification and qualification replaces the 2021 edition. Its public scope confirms dedicated variables, testing and records.
A new edition for brazing
ISO 17779:2026 is the second edition of the international standard for specification and qualification of brazing procedures for metallic materials. It replaced ISO 17779:2021 on 20 October 2026.
According to the public scope, the document covers brazing of a test piece, specimen testing, essential variables and ranges of qualification, acceptance criteria, the brazing procedure qualification record (BPQR) and the brazing procedure specification (BPS).
It includes processes 911 to 926 and 972 according to ISO 4063:2023, such as flame, laser-beam, induction, resistance, furnace and vacuum brazing. Aerospace applications covered by ISO 11745 are excluded. The public scope also states that residual-stress, corrosion-resistance and impact testing are outside its coverage.
Why WPS logic cannot simply be copied
BPS and BPQR have documentation roles comparable with WPS and WPQR, but brazing relies on different physical mechanisms. Joint clearance, heating method, filler distribution, flux or atmosphere, thermal cycle and surface cleanliness may be critical.
Dedicated learning content and assessment questions are therefore needed. Applying fusion-welding terminology without qualification can create a misleading mental model of the brazing process.
Normative boundary
This article describes only the status, subject and publicly available scope of the standard. The actual essential variables, qualification ranges and acceptance criteria must be checked in a legally obtained full text. The EN ISO designation should only be used after European adoption has been confirmed.
