Corrosion is not merely cosmetic rusting. Welded structures often combine a local chemical environment, different microstructures in weld metal and the HAZ, residual stresses, and geometric details such as crevices, washers or lap joints.

Uniform corrosion — Uniform material loss across the entire exposed surface. Typical of general atmospheric corrosion or environments without pronounced local passivation.
Galvanic corrosion — Occurs when two dissimilar metals are electrically connected in an electrolyte. The less noble metal acts as the anode and corrodes more rapidly.
