Welding processes and equipment

Introduction to welding processes

A process is not an isolated entry in a WPS. It is a system comprising the energy source, heat and material transfer, weld-pool protection, mechanisation, personnel competence and process-control architecture. The objective is a process that repeatedly produces the required joint under real fit-up and production variation.

Topic overview

A process is not an isolated entry in a WPS. It is a system comprising the energy source, heat and material transfer, weld-pool protection, mechanisation, personnel competence and process-control architecture. The objective is a process that repeatedly produces the required joint under real fit-up and production variation.

Before comparing productivity and cost, define the critical product property and the failure mode that is not acceptable.

Flame, arc, resistance, beam or mechanical energy generate different thermal cycles, HAZ conditions and distortion.

Consumable or non-consumable electrode, pressure joining or brazing determines dilution and joint geometry.

What the module covers

  • Welding processes — professional selection and industrialisation
  • 1. Select the process from the dominant manufacturing risk
  • 2. IWE/IWT decision sequence
  • 3. What must be reassessed when the process changes
  • Release checklist
  • Technologist deliverable
Educational content does not replace current standards, approved WPS/WPQR documentation or decisions by competent welding coordination personnel.
