ISO 4063 processes

ISO 4063 is a language for unambiguous process identification. It does not state whether a weld is acceptable and does not replace the WPS. It states the physical principle by which the joint was made : by arc, resistance, gas, pressure, beam, plastics joining, cutting, brazing or soldering.

ISO 4063 is a language for unambiguous process identification. It does not state whether a weld is acceptable and does not replace the WPS. It states the physical principle by which the joint was made : by arc, resistance, gas, pressure, beam, plastics joining, cutting, brazing or soldering.

Do not use only a colloquial name such as “CO₂ welding”, “spot welding”, “laser”, “TIG” or a machine name in documentation. Use the standard process number and add the decisive data: filler material, shielding medium, level of mechanisation, polarity, flux, preheat, interpass temperature, torch path, program or cycle.

The process number is only the first identifier. Only together with filler material, gas, parameters, position, thickness and material group does it form a usable welding specification.

If two processes act simultaneously in one welding zone, designate them by a combination of numbers. Practical examples include laser + plasma or laser + MAG. The WPS must then state the parameters for each energy source separately.
