ISO 14731 defines quality-related tasks and responsibilities in welding coordination. In practice, it is the job description for the person or team ensuring that welding is performed in accordance with customer requirements, drawings, standards, WPS/WPQR documentation and the quality system.
Key principle: the coordinator must be competent for the tasks formally assigned by the manufacturer. A qualification title alone is insufficient; authority, responsibility, product knowledge, material knowledge and process experience must match the assigned scope.
The standard helps the manufacturer determine which welding activities are quality-critical and who is responsible for them.
The manufacturer must allocate specific tasks to named persons and ensure that they have appropriate competence.
